When your feet are working fine, you might not think about them very often. But when you’re suffering from foot pain, it can suddenly become hard to wear shoes, stand, walk, or run – and every day becomes a challenge. Ironically, when you’re experiencing foot pain it might cause you to reduce your overall level of physical activity leading to potential weight gain or the weakening of muscles and bones, which could make your foot pain even worse. What is Foot Pain?
Foot pain can manifest in many different ways. You may experience:
- Pain that’s worse when you wear shoes or when you go barefoot
- Pain that gets worse at certain times of the day, like when you first get up in the morning
- Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
- Burning pain
- A dull ache
- Stabbing sensations
- Numbness or a pins and needles sensation
It’s possible your pain might affect your whole foot or just part of it such as the bottom of your foot, heel, or toes.
What Causes Foot Pain?
Foot pain can have many different causes. Understanding why you’re in pain is often the first step towards getting relief. These are a just a few possible conditions that could be causing your issue:
- Diabetes, which can cause nerve damage that leads to numbness or tingling
- Growths like corns, warts, or ingrown toenails
- Osteoarthritis, when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wear down over time
- Impact from walking, jumping or running, leading to a sudden injury or one that develops gradually over time
- Genetic deformities, like flat feet
- Shoes that don’t fit well
- Plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tissue that connects your heel bones to your toe bones
Unfortunately, many common causes of foot pain can intensify one another. For example, shoes that don’t fit well can lead to the development of bunions, or hard, bony bumps at the base of your big toes. These, in turn, can lead to corns or blisters that develop from friction that occurs when bunions keep your shoes from fitting correctly. But fortunately, physical therapy is known to be very effective in treating most of these potential causes for your foot pain.
How to Treat Foot Pain
When you start experiencing foot pain it can be difficult to know where to start seeking help. We know from decades of experience that physical therapy is the best place to begin the process of diagnosing the underlying cause of your condition while also managing your symptoms. At Chiron Physical Therapy, you’ll work with our team of dedicated professionals who will provide you with the support you need. We’ll perform a thorough diagnostic evaluation and set specific goals for your treatment based on your individual symptoms, the root cause of your conditions and your goals for future health. We use a variety of therapies and modalities to relieve pain in the feet which might include:
- Reducing Pain and Swelling … we will use different types of treatments and technologies to reduce your pain and swelling including non-invasive FDA approved laser therapy which uses your body’s own natural healing process to speed recovery, ice, heat and/or electrical stimulation;
- Improving Range of Motion … we will work to restore normal motion and agility, improve flexibility and decrease strain through exercise and hands-on treatment (manual therapy);
- Improving Strength . . . we will design a program to target muscle weakness or imbalances which may have contributed to or now exist as a result;
- Functional Training … once your pain, strength and motion improve, we address movements and tasks that are required in your daily and recreational life.
- Creating Custom Foot Orthotics to support your healing and pain relief (if necessary).
At Chiron we understand that every patient is unique and personalized, targeted treatment is the best way to achieve lasting relief. Many patients find that their issues are resolved during therapy and don’t require more invasive treatment like surgery or the need for pain management through prescription drugs. If your condition requires additional support from a specialist, like an endocrinologist for diabetes or a podiatrist for specific foot conditions, therapy can play a key role in your overall treatment plan.
