When Knee Pain Meets Modern Physical Therapy

Knee and other types of joint pain can make ordinary tasks, from going for a walk to getting out of a chair, feel much harder than they should. And while there’s no one way to address knee discomfort, the right combination of strategies can help reduce symptoms and restore comfortable movement.

At Chiron Physical Therapy, we take a comprehensive approach to relieving joint pain. We start by identifying what’s contributing to your pain, then developing a personalized plan to address joint mobility, muscle weakness, movement control, and your ability to tolerate everyday activities.

While we offer several techniques to achieve these goals, today we want to highlight a few cutting-edge treatment options: laser therapy and direct-current electrical stimulation.

How Can Laser Therapy and Electrical Stimulation Help?

Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light applied to the tissues around the affected joint, helping decrease pain and support the body’s natural cellular processes. For some people with joint pain, including knee osteoarthritis, it can help make movement and exercise more comfortable.

Electrical stimulation uses a mild electric pulse to activate muscles and provide sensory input to the nervous system, which can be useful when pain or injury makes it difficult to comfortably engage the muscles surrounding the knee.

Blending Technology with Active Treatment

We rarely use these techniques on their own, however. They’re most useful when they support active care, such as:

  • Strengthening exercises to improve support around the knee.
  • Mobility work to help restore comfortable movement.
  • Balance and coordination training to improve control.
  • Gradual activity progression to prepare your knee for walking, sports, work, or daily tasks.

Give Your Knee the Right Support

Knee pain should not keep you from the activities that matter most. At Chiron Physical Therapy, we treat the person behind the symptoms and build care around your individual goals. To discover if laser therapy or electrical stimulation might benefit you, schedule an appointment today.

Understanding Direct Access to Physical Therapy

When you’re dealing with pain or injury, you want to start treatment as soon as possible—which means you probably don’t want to go through the hassle of getting a doctor’s referral to start physical therapy.

Fortunately, thanks to direct access laws, you may not have to! Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Direct Access?

Direct access allows qualified physical therapists to act as primary care providers, meaning they can evaluate and treat patients without a referral when certain requirements are met.

In Virginia, eligible physical therapists are those who have completed an approved Doctor of Physical Therapy program or have obtained the required direct access certification. And since the team at Chiron Physical Therapy meets those requirements, you can schedule with us directly!

Is There a Time Limit on Direct Access Care?

Virginia no longer places limits on how long patients can receive physical therapy without a referral. That means you can start treatment with no specific time limit on how long your care can continue without a referral.

However, some requirements do apply if you’re already receiving medical care for the same condition from another provider. Our team can talk you through that process if needed.

Will My Insurance Cover PT Without a Referral?

Direct access and insurance coverage are two separate issues. Legally, you can see a qualified PT without a referral, but your health insurance plan may still require a physician referral, authorization, or coverage requirements before it will pay for your visits.

Coverage requirements vary by insurance company and individual plan, so it’s a good idea to check your plan before starting care.

Celebrate National PT Month: Keep Moving, Keep Living

Most people know the importance of strength when it comes to doing what you love, especially as you get older. However, mobility is essential, too. After all, maintaining mobility can make it easier to bend down in your garden, sit on the floor with your grandkids, or walk your dog all over the neighborhood.

With October being National Physical Therapy Month, the team at Chiron Physical Therapy encourages you to make movement a priority! Maintaining mobility throughout life can support independence, physical function, and overall well-being.

Why Mobility Matters

Our bodies are made to move, and regular physical activity helps reduce the physical decline that often comes with long periods of inactivity.

Fortunately, you don’t need an intense workout routine to support your mobility. Small, consistent efforts count.

Try These Simple Strategies To Boost Mobility

  • Move Throughout the Day: Take short walks, use the stairs when appropriate, or stand and stretch after sitting for extended periods.
  • Practice Balance: Simple balance exercises, such as heel-to-toe walking or one-leg stands, can challenge your balance, help improve stability, and help reduce fall risk.
  • Keep Your Joints Moving: Gentle mobility exercises, such as cat-cows or hip circles, can help you maintain a comfortable range of motion. Bonus: they’re great to do in front of the TV!
  • Choose Activities You Enjoy: Fun activities like hiking, gardening, or dancing can all help you stay active. When you’re having a good time, it’s much easier to stay consistent!

Keep Doing What You Love

At Chiron Physical Therapy, we believe movement is an important part of a healthy, active life. Our team is here to help you get moving today so you can keep doing what matters to you tomorrow. Schedule an appointment with us to learn more!

Healthy Recipe

Roasted Butternut Squash & Apple Soup

A cozy, fall-flavored soup that comes together with simple ingredients. Roasting the squash brings out its natural sweetness, and a swirl of Greek yogurt or a sprinkle of pepitas makes it a satisfying bowl any night of the week.

Butternut squash soup being poured into a bowl

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 medium butternut squash (about 2 lbs), peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, divided
  • 1 medium apple (such as Honeycrisp or Gala), peeled and chopped
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup (optional)
  • Plain Greek yogurt or pepitas, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss the squash with 1 tbsp of the olive oil, the salt, and the pepper, then spread on a baking sheet. Roast for 25–30 minutes, until tender and lightly browned.
  2. While the squash roasts, heat the remaining 1 tbsp olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Sauté the onion for about 5 minutes, until soft.
  3. Add the garlic and apple and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Add the roasted squash, broth, and cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
  5. Blend until smooth with an immersion blender (or carefully in batches in a countertop blender). Stir in the maple syrup, if using.
  6. Ladle into bowls and top with a spoonful of Greek yogurt or a sprinkle of pepitas.
Make it ahead: the soup keeps in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and freezes well for up to 3 months. Reheat gently on the stove, adding a splash of broth if it has thickened.
