I’m Not Injured. So Why Do I Feel So Stiff?

Have you ever stood up after sitting for a while and felt like your body aged ten years in an afternoon? Maybe your hips or knees don’t seem to cooperate as you shuffle into the kitchen, or your back doesn’t want to twist around the way it ought to.

It’s easy to assume this stiffness means you’ve got an underlying injury, and that very well may be the case. However, they’re far from the only reason your body might feel tight or restricted.

In fact, stiffness is often your body’s way of responding to daily habits, changes in activity levels, or normal age-related changes. The good news is that stiffness often improves with some help from the Chiron Physical Therapy team.

Our Patients Are Seeing Results

“I am currently a patient at this clinic, and it has been a great experience from start to finish. From the front desk to the therapists, everyone is welcoming and professional. Taylor always goes the extra step by greeting me with a smile and asking about my family, which truly makes a difference. I especially appreciate Jenna, who took the time to walk me through my EOBs and helped me understand everything clearly. She was patient, thorough, and made sure I had no questions before assisting the next patient. Chiron is more than just a medical office—they go the extra mile to make patients feel like family while helping them get out of pain as quickly as possible. Highly recommend!”

Seven Non-Injury Reasons You Might Feel Stiff

Stiffness isn’t always caused by an injury. Everyday habits, changes in activity, and even stress can leave your muscles and joints feeling tight. Here are seven common reasons you may be feeling stiff.
1

You’re Sitting More Than You Realize

The human body is built to move, so it shouldn’t be surprising that long periods of sitting can reduce joint mobility and cause muscles to feel tight. Even if you’re usually physically active, you still might notice stiffness in your neck, lower back, or hips after spending most of the day sitting down.

2

Your Activity Level Has Increased

Sudden increases in activity can contribute to stiffness. For example, you might feel restricted after starting a new workout program or spending a long weekend doing lots of yardwork. This happens because muscles and joints respond best to consistent movement. Large changes in activity levels can temporarily leave tissues feeling tight and sore.

3

Stress Is Affecting Your Muscles

Many people carry tension in their bodies without realizing it. Stress often leads to increased muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. If the tension persists, you might develop a nagging stiffness in the area.

4

You’re Not Sleeping Well

Sleep is when your body performs much of its recovery work. That means poor-quality sleep can have bigger impacts than just you feeling tired. It’s not uncommon to notice greater stiffness after restless nights or periods of chronic sleep disruption.

5

You’re Getting Older

Getting older doesn’t mean stiffness is inevitable, but aging brings several natural changes that can increase your risk. For example, tendons and ligaments can become less flexible, leading to stiffer joints. Fortunately, regular movement can help maintain mobility and function at any age.

6

You Might Have Arthritis

Alongside joint pain, persistent stiffness is one of the primary symptoms of arthritis, particularly if you experience it in the morning or after long periods of inactivity. But, as with aging-related stiffness, staying active can help you manage your symptoms.

7

Your Muscles Are Weak

Many people assume stiffness is just an issue of short, tight muscles. However, muscle weakness is often the true culprit. When certain muscles lack strength, they have a lower threshold for fatigue. To protect these vulnerable areas, your nervous system may trigger a protective tightening sensation. Strengthening these muscles increases their capacity, allowing your body to relax.

Moving Better with Chiron Physical Therapy

Regardless of the reason for your stiffness, it’s not something you have to live with. Our team can work with you to create a personalized plan to help you move more comfortably.

Your treatment may include:

  • A comprehensive movement assessment to identify mobility restrictions, muscle imbalances, and areas of weakness.
  • Hands-on manual therapy to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and restore movement.
  • Targeted therapeutic modalities, such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation or thermal therapy when appropriate.
  • Targeted exercises to improve mobility, strength, balance, and overall function.
  • Education and practical strategies to help you stay active and prevent stiffness from returning.

Ultimately, our goal is to help you move with greater ease, return to the activities you enjoy, and live without limitations.

How the Neubie Device Helps Reset Muscle Tension at the Source

Muscle tension is often at the root of persistent stiffness. While movement and massage can provide temporary relief, addressing the underlying cause is often the key to lasting improvement.

And what is that underlying cause? In many cases, it’s an issue with your nervous system. When muscles remain in a guarded or overactive state, they can become less efficient during movement. Fortunately, the team at Chiron Physical Therapy offers a cutting-edge treatment approach: the Neubie.

What Is the Neubie?

The Neubie uses direct current electrical stimulation to improve communication between the brain, nerves, and muscles. Unlike traditional approaches that focus solely on your muscles, the Neubie helps target areas where the nervous system may be keeping muscles in a guarded state.

How the Neubie Can Help

We don’t generally use the Neubie on its own. Instead, we combine it with guided exercise to help retrain muscle activation patterns and promote more efficient movement.

  • Reduced muscle tension and stiffness
  • Improved mobility and range of motion
  • Better muscle activation and coordination
  • Decreased discomfort during movement
  • Faster return to daily activities and exercise

What to Expect During Treatment

During a Neubie session, electrodes are placed on targeted areas while you perform specific movements or exercises. We might also combine it with other physical therapy treatments, including:

  • Manual therapy
  • Movement retraining
  • A targeted therapeutic exercise program
