What is Hand Pain?
Hand pain can take many different forms. But if you are suffering with any of the following symptoms, physical therapy could be a long-term solution for your pain:
- Dull pain in your joints
- Areas of warmth and swelling around joints
- Pain that gradually builds as you perform a repetitive motion
- Stiffness in your hands when you wake up
- Burning or shooting pain in your fingers or wrists
- Feelings of weakness or instability in your joints
- A feeling that your joints are grinding against one another
What Causes Hand Pain?
Because we use our hands for virtually everything, there are a variety of factors that could contribute to your particular symptoms. However, some of the most common causes of hand pain are:
- Genetics, which can cause your hands to be more prone to inflammation and pain
- Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, which can manifest in your hands as well as other parts of your body
- Aging, which can weaken tendons and joints in your hands and wrists
- Arthritis, which occurs when small joints in your hands become inflamed
- Ganglion cysts, which form on your hands and cause swelling and movement-based pain
- Tendonitis, an inflammation of tendons in your hands or wrist that often results from repeated overuse
- Carpal tunnel syndrome, which is caused when a nerve passing through your wrist becomes compressed
- Overuse injuries that result from repeated motion over a period of time
The average American spends over three hours a day on their cell phone. Holding the weight of a cell phone, typing or playing games on the screen requires tiny, repetitive motions that cause strain and damage over time. And, if you have a job that involves repetitive movements, like typing, using handheld machinery, or pressing buttons, you may also be at increased risk for hand pain. But don’t despair, that’s what we’re here for. During your initial evaluation at Chiron our physical therapists will ask questions about your lifestyle to help pinpoint any aggravating factors.
How to Treat Hand Pain
We often meet patients under the impression that they need to see a certified hand therapist for their hand pain. However, our team of licensed professionals are highly educated and fully capable of treating your hand pain and helping you to prevent a recurrence in the future. It is a common misconception that working with a certified hand therapist is the only route to hand pain relief. From the day you start working with our team at Chiron Physical Therapy, we will not only diagnose the root cause of your hand pain but also create a personalized exercise program that will help you:
- Reduce Pain and Swelling … we will use different types of treatments and technologies to reduce your pain and swelling including non-invasive FDA approved laser therapy which uses your body’s own natural healing process to speed recovery, ice, heat and/or electrical stimulation;
- Improve Range of Motion … we will work to restore normal motion and agility, improve flexibility and decrease strain through exercise and hands-on treatment (manual therapy);
- Improve Strength . . . we will design a program to target muscle weakness or imbalances which may have contributed to or now exist as a result;
- Functional Training … once your pain, strength and motion improve, we address movements and tasks that are required in your daily and recreational life.
